Modern Masters Metallic Paint
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: I painted my walls but they do not look even or the finish has bubbles. What is wrong?
A: Usually the main reasons for a finish not looking even are:
- The user did not use our Extender for Rolling.
- They used the wrong size or type of roller.
- They rolled the metallic paint like regular latex wall paint.
When rolling a large area, you must add our Extender for Rolling to the metallic paint in a ratio of 16 ounces of Extender to a gallon of metallic paint or 4 ounces to a quart. When painting without the Extender for Rolling, the metallic paint will dry very quickly, which can lead you to an uneven finish and lap marks.
Use a roller cover with a ½” nap. Using a lower nap can result in the flattening of the metallic particles and a dulling of the paint finish. Also, do not use foam rollers as this will create many bubbles and leave a messy look.
When rolling with our Metallic Paint Collection™, do not roll in the traditional way of creating a “V” or a “W” as this will change the direction of the metallic particles giving you a very uneven look in your finish. You do need to roll up and down and back roll the entire wall either from floor to ceiling or ceiling to floor. This keeps the metallic paint looking uniform.
Q: Can I use water instead of Extender for Rolling?
A: You do not want to replace our Extender for Rolling for metallic paint with water when rolling.
Once you add water to the paint you will shorten the drying time even more than it already is. You will only want to use water when diluting the paint for a sprayed application.
Q: Why can’t I use my airless or turbine spray rig to apply your paint?
A: When spraying our Metallic Paint Collection™ through an airless rig the metallic particles will be destroyed when the paint is atomized. The results are a tone of color and not a true metallic finish. When spraying with a turbine rig there is not enough air pressure created to push the metallic paint. This can result in a spitting of the paint and a severe dulling of the metallic finish.
Q: Why can’t I get your flash colors to give me a solid finish?
A: The biggest question we receive on the Metallic Paint Collection™ is about the sheers. The sheer colors are meant to be a decorative accent over another paint color and are not meant to be a solid wall color. They work best when used in a decorative or a trim finish. The finished look will not always appear as they do in the jar. The color will only “flash” from certain directions and will appear as an off tone from others. The sheers can be sprayed but can take anywhere from 3 coats or more to create a uniform finish.
Q: Do I need to use Modern Masters MasterClear® on top of my metallic finish?
A: We recommend using MasterClear® on exterior applications or on interior applications that are in high traffic areas. MasterClear® is formulated to maintain the metallic value of the Metallic Paint Collection™. The use of other clear coats could result in the dulling of the finish.
